Padma: he loved this community/ update: prayer service tonight @ 9:00 PM

It is with much sadness that I inform residents of Glenmarie Cove the demise of R. Padmanathan, a pioneer in this small community of ours. He passed away early this morning just shortly after 5:00 AM.

Pat moved into GC on 3rd January 2007 and became the first Protem President of the Residents Association.

Pat developed his expertise in gardening as a hobby, and he has been at it for almost 50 years. He was always  willing to help his GC neighbours improve their gardens because of his  wish to improve the overall ambiance in GC.  The first time I met Padma was at his home and I was totally in awe with the garden that he keeps.

Due to the ever-increasing requests from his fellow residents to offer advice and garden maintenance services, Pat started his landscaping service in March 2010 and had over a dozen households under his charge. He even found time to supervise the daily work undertaken by the maintenance contractor from September 2009 to April 2010, a period when the common areas, lagoon and river front were looking their best. In the last couple of years he was extremely concerned about the deterioration which is so clear – from cracked walls that have been patched up but left unpainted to creepers taking over the boardwalks.

When GCD handed over certain aspects of  the maintenance to MPK recently , Pat went straight to the  Council to demand for  information that he knew he will not get from GCD in a thousand years. Pat’s grievance with GCD is well documented and he had steadfastly refused to pay the maintenance charges for the last couple of years because of the poor service by GCD. He had fired off a number of letters to GCD , DRB Properties, MPK and Klang politicians – all to no avail. Most of us paid, some were even keen to be apologists for GCD but Pat held on to his guns.

Pat died with his principles intact and I salute him for that.

Our deepest condolences to his wife, Sheila, and his children and other members of the family.

Update: There will be a prayer service at 9:00 PM tonight at No.18, Jalan Damar Laut 2A. The funeral service tomorrow will be at 11:00 AM.

  1. Padma was the first person that we met when we moved into GC in 2007 and during the last five and a half years we probably met him more often than any resident. Every morning and evening he was out tending to his garden and he always had time for a friendly chat or to hand out some advice, mostly on his life’s passion – plants, trees and flowers. It was his dream to live in this green riverside community and make it a place that everyone will admire and enjoy. We called Padma “neighbourhood watch,” as he always kept a close eye on the people and houses around him, We very much appreciated his efforts and concern, as well as his friendship, and we will miss him dearly. Our thoughts are with Sheila, Lisa and Bevin at this very sad time.
